The Selma Bloody Sunday Foot Soldiers
Over six hundred foot soldiers marched behind John Lewis and Hosea Williams. We have collected the nation’s most comprehensive database of historic photographs, videos, eyewitness reports, and oral histories to offer the most in-depth examination of Bloody Sunday to date. Our findings have revealed critical historic sites that have yet to be preserved and highlighted numerous voices that provide new perspectives on this monumental event.
The photographs have been collected from the following archives and are used with permission: Alabama Department of Archives and History, The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, The Charles Moore Photographic Archive (The Dolph Briscoe Center for American History, The University of Texas at Austin), The James “Spider” Martin Photographic Archive (The Dolph Briscoe Center for American History, The University of Texas at Austin), and The National Archives and Records Administration. Photos from the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) were obtained by a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA 66256).
